Zach Deputy
Zach Deputy
Hailing from the South Carolina coast, Zach Deputy has infused his earthy blues, roots-rock and soul with hiphop beats, dancehall rhythms and a bit of the tropical humidity of Calypso and reggae. Maybe it is a natural result of living and performing along the Southeast's beaches for the last five years; maybe it is a conscious desire to spice up the intuitive simplicity of his native, regional R&B with the exotic rhythms of the islands. It could even be Zach's family roots in Puerto Rico and St. Croix. Either way, the result is an original sound as comfortable and accessible as worn flip-flops, as open and inviting like a seaside cabana, and full of flavor surprises like a New Orleans gumbo.

Having toured the country in his early 20's with a couple of bands that just didn't inspire him, Zach Deputy followed his muse back to Savannah, where he began to craft his own approach to music as a solo artist. An exceptionally tasty guitar player with a tremendous vocal range, natural stage presence and contagious playfulness and humor, Zach embraced the creative freedom of performing alone, but soon realized it also had its limitations. Thus, he began to employ live looping as a means of filling out the sound. Layers of hip-hop inspired vocal beat boxing fill in for the drums, rhythmic guitar tracks in different tunings flesh out the melody and the thump of the bass. Soaring lead vocals, harmonies, choruses and guitar leads—all of this made possible through simple technology, but all of it realized and delivered by a skill and mastery of technique and made pure through the injection of warm, heartfelt soul. Add to the mix the Afro-Cuban stylings of Zach's percussionist and lifelong friend Paul Kearns, and you have a unique, unforgettable live musical experience, one that is appealing to fans of any style of roots and world music.

Zach Deputy has been honing his technique and developing his repertoire through performing 250-300 shows per year for the last few years. His live show now has such a full sound that he has even had five-piece bands open shows. In the South Carolina and Georgia beachside and resort communities where Zach perfected his craft. tourists and summer residents caught up in the fun took the music back home, creating fan bases in places where Zach Deputy had yet to travel. In late 2007, Zach Deputy began getting to those places, and first-time shows saw remarkable attendance throughout the Midwest, a major feeder region for Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach. Support dates with Ryan Montbleau Band in the Northeast had an immediate impact, and Zach Deputy quickly became a buzz band in the region. The tireless work ethic has paid off, as audiences all up-and-down the East Coast and as far West as the Mississippi are reacting with genuine joy and passion, spreading the word to friends and fellow music lovers. Zach Deputy lives on the road, and he is bound to hit your town soon. If he does, head on over—he will be glad to see you—but be sure to bring your dancing shoes… and prepare for the wow factor.
